Captain America by Steranko


Number two in an unintended series :-)

Following yesterday's Nick Fury sketch by Jim Steranko, here's another dynamic B&W image from the Jaunty One, this time of the star-spangled Avenger, Captain America. The combination of Steranko's pencils and the great Joe Sinnott's inks make for a slick pic...

Definitely channeling Kirby, but the pose looks a little awkward and unnatural to me. Kirby's 'awkward' poses still seemed to work (in his early years), but Steranko's don't always, somehow seeming a little stiff. Funnily enough, I think Paul Gulacy was better at Steranko's 'style' than Steranko was.

I know what you mean about Gulacy. Much as it pains me to say it, his Steranko-esque style is more fluid and naturalistic... although it has become a bit of a caricature in recent years. I suppose Gulacy, having a much larger body of work in comics, had more chance to develop than Jaunty Jim ever did...
