FF Fridays: Bruce Timm Art

Of all modern comic book artists, Bruce Timm is probably the best at recapturing the simpler, brighter styles of the Silver and Bronze Ages of comics. His work has a charm and humour ( and very often a cheeky sensuality ) that is a refreshing change from so much of today's grim 'n' gritty comic art. Here are some properly groovy examples of his retro style as he takes on the fabulous FF and a few of their far-out friends and foes...

Got to confess, I'd never heard of him until now. I have seen worse FF ( modern ) art.

Timm's stuff is so great. I love the clean lines and the obvious references to Kirby. He needs to make more animated cartoons.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

John, you really should check out more of Timm's artwork - it's very cool indeed, especially his more, er, X-rated stuff...

Cal, to be honest I'd prefer it if Timm drew a few more actual comics :-)

JP, how could you not have heard of him? I posted one of his pics (Marvel Girl) only last week or thereabouts. Turn in your Blue Peter badge at once. Cer, Steve Rude is also good at capturing that '60s mood. Check out his Superman and Hulk team-up.

Yeah, I like The Dude's work too. Have you seen the Mister Miracle Special he did for DC way back in 1987? A spot-on Kirby pastiche.

Darwyn Cooke is also great at capturing that optimistic Silver Age vibe and I also loved his short-lived take on The Spirit...

Yup, I bought a couple of copies of that Special at the time and I've still got them. Haven't seen Darwyn Cooke's Spirit, but I'll keep an eye out for it in the back issue bins. Hope you don't mind if I nick that pic of Susan Storm for my Babe of the Day feature.

I did see the beautiful MG images, Kid, but I guess I couldn't have been paying attention to the artists, in which case, THAT was the first time I'd heard of him.
Your blog was the first I'd heard of Rude, too, whose style I do like!
( the badge is in the post, bah!)

Will definitely check it out, Simon!
