Happy Birthday to both Philip Glenister ( 49 ) and Keeley Hawes ( 37 ) - two of my favourite actors who were fantastic together in the late, lamented Ashes To Ashesas DCI Gene Hunt and DI Alex Drake...
Agreed that LIFE ON MARS was better but Gene was such a great character that any excuse to bring him back was okay with me and luckily the chemistry in ASHES was different but just as good!
I never got around to watching Ashes to Ashes. I remember watching Life on Mars. When it got to the end of the final episode of the first series, it was announced that the next series would be in about a year's time. I was shocked by how long I would have had to waited!
Life On Mars was obviously a tough act to follow, being one of the most original TV dramas in recent years. Ashes To Ashes had a different tone - often lighter and more comedic but it suited the '80s vibe. And, once some of the earlier elements were ditched, like the boring subplot with Alex's mother, the show really took on a Life of its own :-)
Hi Simon - it's been a long time. Glad to see you're still here! :)
I've recently rewatched AtA (except for the last episode because I couldn't take it emotionally, since I started crying like, halfway through the third series) and am sad and somewhat surprised to say it wasn't as enjoyable for me the second time around. Probably because I knew how it ended, but still. Also, the first series definitely wins out in the fashion arena over the second and third, IMO. Loved LoM both times I've watched it through, though...
Hi Mickey! Great to hear from you! It has, indeed, been a long time :-) Hope you're well.
As you can see from other recent posts I'm only vaguely "here" at the moment. I thought I might have more time for blogging while I'm away from work but, between my treatments, the kids using the computer and me spending a lot of my time asleep, blogging has slowed to the speed of an arthritic snail. I hope to catch up at some point...
As for Ashes To Ashes, we still don't own the third series on DVD, which we'll have to put right. But, as you say, it is hard viewing sometimes, especially that heart-breaking final episode. As for the show's fashion sense it's quite telling that my fave stories are episode one ( Alex's hooker outfit ) and the episode where Gene and Alex are stuck in a bank vault and Alex starts to strip off from the heat... Superficial, moi? ;-)
A great show but not as good as LIFE ON MARS, the prequel series. Still, both were head and shoulders above many others.
